Archegone

An archegonium; the female reproductive organ in mosses, liverworts, and ferns.

From Greek 'arche-' (beginning, origin) combined with 'gone' (reproductive, generating). Scientists named this structure for being the 'original' or 'first' female reproductive organ in evolutionary terms.
