Archipallium

The most primitive or oldest part of the cerebral cortex; the ancestral brain tissue from which modern cortex evolved.

From Greek 'archi-' (primitive, original) + Latin 'pallium' (mantle, cloak—used metaphorically for the brain's outer layer). Describes the evolutionarily ancient cortical layer.
