Archipelago

/ˌɑːrkəˈpɛləˌɡoʊ/ noun

An archipelago is a group or chain of islands clustered together in the sea. Famous examples include Japan and the Philippines.

From Italian “arcipelago,” originally a name for the Aegean Sea, from Greek “arkhi-” meaning “chief” and “pelagos” meaning “sea.” It shifted from naming a sea to naming the islands in it.
