A staunch or extreme supporter of papal authority; the most devoted believer in the Pope's supremacy.

From arch- (meaning 'chief' or 'extreme') plus papist (from pope, derived from Latin papa, 'father'). Created by Protestant writers who wanted to insult the most zealous Catholics.
