Upright, erect, or attentive; having an alert or upright posture or attention.

From Latin 'arrectus,' past participle of 'arigere' (to raise up), combining 'ad' (to) and 'regere' (to direct or rule). The term gradually became archaic as 'erect' became the standard form.
