Ascitic

Relating to or affected by ascites, a medical condition where fluid abnormally builds up in the abdomen.

From Greek 'askites' (bag-like), derived from 'askos' (wineskin), referring to the belly's distended appearance. The suffix '-ic' makes it an adjective form. Medieval physicians used this term because the swollen abdomen resembled a filled bag or skin.
