Ascus

/ˈæskəs/ noun

A sac-like structure in certain fungi that contains and releases spores; the basic reproductive unit in ascomycete fungi.

From Latin 'ascus' (leather wine bag or sack), borrowed because the spore-containing structure resembled a bag. The word was adapted from botany in the 1800s. Related to 'asci' (plural) and 'ascospore.'
