A genus of freshwater isopod crustaceans, commonly called water sowbugs, water lice, or aquatic pill bugs.
From Latin 'asellus' (woodlouse). The term dates back to classical times, with uncertain etymology but possibly connected to 'asina' (donkey) as a diminutive.
