Asimina

A genus of North American shrubs and trees of the custard apple family, commonly known as pawpaw plants, which produce edible fruit.

From Powhatan Algonquian 'aposomin' (the pawpaw fruit), adopted into Latinized botanical nomenclature. The scientific genus name preserves the Indigenous American origin of the plant's common name.
