An enzyme found primarily in liver and heart tissue that becomes elevated when these organs are damaged. Also known as AST or SGOT, it's commonly used to assess liver function.
Named for aspartate, an amino acid, and its role as an aminotransferase enzyme that transfers amino groups between molecules. Originally called SGOT (serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase) when discovered in the 1950s.
