Assacu

A small South American fish of the catfish family, also known as the wood catfish, found in Amazonian waters.

From Portuguese or Tupí (indigenous Amazonian language), likely 'assacú' or similar, transferred into English through Portuguese colonial naturalists and 18th-19th century scientific descriptions of Amazonian fauna. The exact etymological origin is uncertain but reflects Amazonian indigenous knowledge.
