Asymptotic

/ˌæsɪmpˈtɑtɪk/ adjective

Relating to an asymptote; describing a curve that approaches but never quite reaches a straight line or value, getting infinitely close without touching.

From Greek 'asymptotos' meaning 'not falling together', from 'a-' (not) + 'syn' (together) + 'ptotos' (falling). The mathematical concept was formalized in the 17th century as calculus developed.
