An atoll is a ring-shaped coral island, or chain of islands, that surrounds a lagoon, usually in warm ocean waters.
It comes into English from Dhivehi (Maldivian) *atholhu*, meaning 'lagoon island'. The word was adopted by European sailors exploring the Indian Ocean.
