Atrabile

Archaic term for black bile, one of the four bodily humors in ancient and medieval medicine, supposedly causing melancholy.

From Latin atra bilis literally 'black bile' (atra 'black' + bilis 'bile'). From ancient Greek medical theory adopted by medieval and Renaissance physicians.
