The process of listening and comprehending spoken language; the auditory equivalent of reading that involves decoding and understanding sound.

A neologism created in the mid-20th century by analogy with 'reading' and 'writing'—formed from 'audit' or 'audition' plus -ing. Part of modern language pedagogy terminology.
