Australopithecinae

A scientific subfamily of early human ancestors that lived in Africa millions of years ago, walking upright but with ape-like features.

From Latin australis (southern) plus Greek pithekos (ape), referring to 'southern apes.' The -inae suffix indicates it's a subfamily in scientific classification.
