To officially permit or give permission for something; to empower someone to act on behalf of an authority.

From Old French 'autoriser,' derived from Latin 'auctoritas' (authority or power). The British spelling 'authorise' differs from American 'authorize,' but both trace to the same Latin root about having authority.
