A plant that produces its own food through photosynthesis and doesn't need external nutrients from other organisms (an autotrophic plant).
From Greek 'auto-' (self) and 'phyte' (plant). This botanical term has been largely replaced by 'autotrophic plant' in modern scientific usage.
