A device that automatically measures and controls time intervals for a specific function, like an oven or camera.

From Greek 'auto-' (self) + 'timer' (from Latin 'timere' meaning to fear/mark time, or more directly from 'time'). Modern mechanical/electronic term emerging in early 20th century.
