Avant-garde

/ˌævɒ̃ˈɡɑːrd/ noun

New and experimental ideas in art, culture, or politics — the advance guard that scouts territory others will later occupy.

From French avant-garde (advance guard), a military term for troops that scout ahead of the main force. Applied to art in the 1820s by Henri de Saint-Simon. Every art movement starts as avant-garde and ends as mainstream — the scouts become the settlers.
