Plural of avocado, a pear-shaped tropical fruit with creamy pale green flesh and a large central pit.

From Spanish 'aguacate,' which came from Nahuatl (Aztec) 'ahuacatl.' The word evolved through Spanish colonization of Mexico and entered English in the 17th century, sometimes called 'alligator pear' in early usage.
