The state, condition, or realm of being aware; consciousness or mindfulness as a domain.

From aware (Old English 'gewær,' meaning 'cautious' or 'wary,' from Germanic roots) + -dom suffix (Old English 'dōm' meaning 'judgment' or 'domain'). The -dom suffix creates abstract nouns.
