Axletree

A bar or shaft that passes through the center of a wheel, on which the wheel rotates; an axle of a vehicle.

From Old English 'eaxl' (shoulder, axis) + 'treow' (tree, wood, beam). The compound originally referred to the wooden beam serving as the axis for wheels, combining the physical structure (tree=beam) with its function (axle).
