A synthetic fiber made from regenerated protein, created by dissolving protein (often from milk or soybeans) and reforming it into thread.

From 'azo-' (azo compounds, nitrogen chemistry) + '-lon' (possibly from nylon, or from 'textile' concepts). Developed in the 1930s-1940s as chemists attempted to create synthetic fibers from natural proteins.
