A purple protein in certain bacteria that captures light energy and uses it to pump ions across the cell membrane.
From bacterio- (bacteria) + rhodopsin (Greek rhodon, 'rose' + opsis, 'sight'). Named for the purple color and light-sensing ability similar to animal visual pigments.
