Bailing

/ˈbeɪlɪŋ/ verb

Scooping water out of a boat to prevent it from sinking, or abandoning a difficult situation.

From 'bail,' which comes from Old French 'baille' meaning a bucket. The nautical meaning came first; the slang meaning 'to abandon' developed later as people compared leaving a sinking ship to 'bailing out.'
