The monetary unit of Panama, named after the Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa who first crossed the Pacific Ocean.

Named directly after Vasco Núñez de Balboa (1475-1519), the Spanish conquistador. The currency was established in 1904 when Panama became independent, honoring the European explorer who reached the Pacific from the Atlantic.
