Narrative songs or poems that tell stories, often of love, tragedy, or adventure. Traditional folk songs passed down through oral tradition.

From Old French balade 'dancing song', from Late Latin ballare 'to dance'. Originally accompanied dances, later evolved into narrative songs without dance.
