Barathrum

A Latin form or variant of barathron, referring to a pit, chasm, or abyss, often used in medieval and classical Latin texts.

From Greek barathron through Latin barathrum, used in classical Latin literature and philosophy to describe both literal pits and metaphorical abysses of despair.
