A deep-pitched male singing voice that falls between bass and tenor, or a singer with this type of voice.

From Italian 'baritono,' from Greek 'barys' (heavy, deep) and 'tonos' (tone). The term emerged in the 17th century when voice classifications became standardized in opera.
