An obsolete or archaic variant spelling of baritone, or a rare musical stringed instrument with sympathetic strings.

From Greek 'barys' (heavy/low) + 'tonos' (tone/pitch). The alternate spelling reflects historical variations before standardization; the instrument sense comes from its deep tone.
