Bathtub

/ˈbæθtʌb/ noun

A large container for holding water in which a person can sit and bathe.

From 'bath' plus 'tub' — but 'tub' comes from Middle Dutch 'tubbe' meaning a wooden container for brewing beer! Early bathtubs were literally repurposed beer vats. Medieval brewers made large wooden vessels for fermenting ale, and people discovered these made perfect bathing containers when not in use.
