A scale for measuring wind speed, ranging from 0 (calm) to 12 (hurricane force), developed by Admiral Francis Beaufort.

Named after Sir Francis Beaufort (1774-1857), an Irish Royal Navy officer who devised the scale in 1805. The scale was officially adopted by the British Admiralty in 1838 and became internationally recognized for maritime and meteorological use.
