A type of private gold coin minted in North Carolina in the 1830s-1840s by the Bechtler family, before the U.S. Mint had a southern branch.

Named after the Bechtler family, German-born jewelers and assayers who settled in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. These private coins filled a critical gap in the Carolina gold rush economy when official currency was scarce.
