Begrime

To make very dirty or grimy; to coat with dirt, grime, or soot.

From be- (prefix) + grime (from earlier English grim + the suffix -e, or directly from grime meaning 'dirt'). Grime became a separate noun referring specifically to ground-in dirt and soot.
