Bellsouth

A former major telecommunications company that served the southeastern United States, part of the original Bell System.

Compound of 'Bell' (after Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone) and 'South' (indicating its geographic service region). Created during the 1984 breakup of AT&T's Bell System monopoly.
