A region in South Asia divided between Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal. Also refers to Bengal cats or Bengal tigers.
From Sanskrit 'Vanga' referring to the ancient kingdom in the region, later Arabized to 'Bangala' and then adapted into various European languages as Bengal. The name has maintained its geographical significance for over a millennium.
