Bipolarity

/ˌbaɪpoʊˈlærɪti/ noun

The quality or state of having two distinct opposite poles, centers, or extremes, often used in psychology to describe mood disorders or in politics to describe systems with two power centers.

From bi- (two) + polarity (from Latin polaris, relating to poles). The term developed in the 19th century first in physics and magnetism, then expanded to psychology in the 20th century with the formal diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
