A silly or foolish person who lacks intelligence or makes thoughtless decisions.

Compound of 'bird' and 'brain,' coined in the early 1900s based on the outdated belief that birds had tiny brains and therefore weren't very intelligent; this is actually scientifically inaccurate, as some birds are remarkably clever.
