A brownish pigment made from soot collected from wood smoke, used in art for drawing, painting, and watercolors.
From French bistre, possibly from Dutch bisters or German Bister. The source may trace to Old Dutch or relate to 'beast' because animal charcoal was sometimes used. The pigment has been used in art since the Renaissance.
