Bit

A bit can mean a small piece or amount of something. In computing, a bit is the smallest unit of information, representing a 0 or 1.

From Old English “bita,” meaning “bite” or “piece bitten off.” The computing sense was shortened from “binary digit” in the mid-20th century.
