Describing an experience that is both painful and pleasurable, sad and happy simultaneously. It often refers to memories, endings, or experiences that evoke mixed emotions of joy tinged with sorrow.

Originally from Middle English, literally describing taste that combined bitter and sweet flavors. By the 16th century, it began describing emotional experiences that similarly combined opposing feelings, particularly in poetry and literature about love and loss.
