Bobstay

A nautical rope or cable that runs from a ship's bow stem to the end of the bowsprit to stabilize and support it.

From 'bob' (to move up and down) + 'stay' (a rope or cable supporting a mast or spar). This term emerged in sailing terminology when ships required multiple cables to keep their bowsprits steady in rough seas.
