Bonbo

A variant or regional term for the bonobo ape, or a historical misidentification of African primates in early European accounts.

Possibly from Bantu languages of Central Africa where bonobos are native, related to 'bonobo.' The term shows how European naturalists adapted African words for primates during colonial exploration.
