A rough, uncomfortable vehicle (especially an early bicycle with a solid frame and no springs) that causes a lot of jarring and vibration.

Compound of 'bone' + 'shaker,' referring to the vehicle's tendency to shake one's bones. This 19th-century slang term humorously exaggerated the discomfort of riding early cycles and carriages with poor suspension.
