A dedicated room or space in a building used for storing, organizing, or selling books; a library or bookshop space.

From 'book' (Old English 'bōc') + 'room' (Old English 'rūm', meaning space or chamber). This term appeared as personal libraries became common among the educated classes in the 17th-18th centuries.
