The practices, philosophy, or characteristics of booksellers as a group; the culture or trade of selling books commercially.

From 'bookseller' (book + seller) + '-ism' (Greek '-ismos', a suffix forming abstract nouns denoting practices or doctrines). Emerged in the 19th century as the book trade became a distinct professional enterprise.
