Boomkin

/ˈbuːmkɪn/ noun

A spar or beam extending from the hull of a ship, used to extend rigging or sails; also called a bumkin.

From 'boom' (a pole) + '-kin' (diminutive suffix meaning 'small'). Despite the diminutive suffix, boomkins are often quite substantial. This nautical term evolved in English as sailors developed specific vocabulary for ship parts.
