A genus of spiral-shaped bacteria that causes Lyme disease and other illnesses transmitted by ticks and lice.

Named after Ambroise Borrel, a French bacteriologist from the early 1900s, using the Linnaean naming convention of -ia. The genus was identified when scientists could finally see bacteria under microscopes.
