A genus of aquatic plants with floating leaves, commonly known as water shield, found in ponds and slow-moving streams.

Modern scientific Latin genus name, possibly derived from a Classical Latin or Greek root meaning 'brass' or referring to the plant's metallic-looking leaves. Formalized as a genus in botanical classification during the 18th century.
